Roland TD-27 Downloadable Expansion Drum Kits

It seems to be pretty common knowledge among e-drummers that the Roland module drum sounds are neither very realistic nor very good-sounding in general.

One option to improve this is to download cutom drum kits directly to the module (another option is to use a VST like Superior Drummer or EzDrummer). The author has no experience with neither of the options.

This page contains an incomplete list of providers of custom drum kit downloads for the Roland TD-27 module (and other modules).

If you know more, please comment! I will add them to the list.

General Observations

  • All mentioned drum kits or packages allow you to edit them in the module. They will just appear as “custom kits”.
  • All of them are generally built using the existing modelling and processing capabilities of the Roland module.
  • Some drum kits or packages use samples recorded from real acoustic drums to improve the sound. These are then layered with the existing Roland module sounds (generated through the existing modelling and processing capabilities of the module). In most offerings, it’s not clear which drums were used for sampling, and which instruments in the drum kit will benefit from the samples.
  • Prices range from 6 GBP / 8 USD for a single drum kit to 150 GBP / 200 USD for a package with a lot of kits.
  • The author had a very hard time trying to assess the sound quality of the offerings. These are mostly presented as youtube videos. When watching them, make sure to use the same audio equipment / headphones that you also use for listening to your drums normally. Note that listening on a smartphone or on non-wifi network can also degrade audio quality.

V Expressions

V Expressions offer a bunch of different packages of drum kits with prices from 50-75 USD. Some of these use samples recorded from real acoustic drum sets, e.g. the MAXX, Metal Bender, Traditions and Venue Live packages. They don’t go into detail what kinds of drums were used for that, or for which instruments they use them in the kit.

Drum-Tec

Drum-Tec have different packages of drum kits, called Sound Editions, all at around 50 USD. They mention they also use and provide their own samples to improve the sound:

The eDrum Workshop

The eDrum Workshop offer individual kits, each 6 GBP. They can also be bought in collections, priced at 18-24 GBP, and a package of all of their kits is 150 GBP.

It looks like most or all of their kits use specific samples actually recorded from real acoustic drums. These are layered together with the Roland modelled sounds. They say they provide and use samples from snare and kickdrums. For some kits, they even provide information which drum models were used for creating the samples:

e-Drumcenter

e-Drumcenter offer “25 unique kits” for about 26 USD. There is no information regarding any real-world samples used:
